The Holland Code
The Holland Code: Listening to the Shape of Your Interests
The Holland Code allows us to consider our interests to guide our career choice. If you join an art therapy-based career course with me, the Holland test will help to inform your decision.
There is a quiet wisdom in what draws us in.
The work we linger over.
The tasks that make time soften.
The moments when effort feels almost like rest.
The Holland Code, also called RIASEC, is one way of listening to that wisdom. Not to define us, not to rush us forward—but to notice the patterns of interest that have always been quietly present.
It asks a simple, human question:
What kinds of doing feel most like home to you?
Six Ways of Moving Through the World
The Holland Code speaks in six gentle languages. Most of us speak more than one.
🌱 Realistic
This is the language of hands and ground.
Of building, fixing, tending, moving.
Realistic interests often feel calm in the physical world—where effort is visible and results can be touched.
There is dignity in practical care.
🔍 Investigative
This is the language of curiosity.
Of questions asked slowly.
Of patterns noticed beneath the surface.
Investigative interests are drawn to understanding—not to rush toward answers, but to sit with wonder.
🎨 Artistic
This is the language of expression.
Of color, sound, words, and feeling.
Of saying what cannot always be explained.
Artistic interests move toward freedom and meaning, toward honesty rather than certainty.
🤝 Social
This is the language of presence.
Of listening deeply.
Of offering help without needing to fix.
Social interests find purpose in connection, in shared growth, in walking alongside others.
🌟 Enterprising
This is the language of movement and momentum.
Of ideas lifted into the world.
Of gathering people around a shared direction.
Enterprising interests carry courage—the courage to begin.
đź“‹ Conventional
This is the language of order and care.
Of systems that hold things gently in place.
Of creating calm through clarity.
Conventional interests protect stability, allowing others to move freely within it.
You Are a Blend, Not a Category
Most people do not belong to one language alone.
You may move between them.
You may change over time.
You may discover new parts of yourself when life asks something new of you.
None of this means you are inconsistent.
It means you are alive.
Holding the Holland Code Softly
The Holland Code is not a map with one destination.
It is more like a compass—quiet, patient, and optional.
It can help you notice what nourishes you.
It can help you be gentler with yourself when something doesn’t fit.
But it should never rush you or narrow you.
A Closing Reflection
In essence, the RIASEC Holland Code will give you a three letter code that helps to define your interests so that you can choose a career.
The Holland Code is an invitation to listen—to yourself, to your curiosity, to the work that feels like breathing.
