I allow myself many mindfulness moments each day.
Art Therapy Painting

Today I spent some time on mindfulness by finger painting, dissecting my thoughts layer by layer.

I loved today’s experience of finger painting. As my thinking evolved, the art piece evolved as well. With each layer my thoughts could transcend the boundaries of the previous moment.

Mindful activities such as finger painting are so helpful for our many addictions because mindfulness quietens noise.

We are taught by media, society and the pharmaceutical industry that we can only silence noise with a substance or a screen.

But art moves beyond the external and reconnects you with your internal ability to create calm.

What are you using to silence the noise in your life? Could you replace it with daily mindful art, such as finger painting?

Finger Painting: A Gentle Way to Be Present

There are moments when words feel like too much. When thinking is heavy, and the body simply needs something soft and grounding. Finger painting can be a quiet invitation to slow down and return to the present moment using mindfulness —one touch at a time.

Finger painting is not about making something impressive or “good.” It’s about feeling the coolness of the paint, noticing how colors blend, and allowing your hands to move freely without judgment.

Coming Back to the Body with Mindfulness

Mindfulness doesn’t always begin in the mind. Sometimes it begins in the hands.

As your fingers touch the paint, you may notice textures, temperatures, and gentle pressure. These small sensations help anchor attention in the present moment. There is no need to think ahead or look back—just this color, this movement, this breath.

A Safe Space for Expression

Finger painting offers a soft way to express feelings without needing to name them. Colors can show up as they are. Strokes can be slow or playful, light or bold. Everything is welcome.

There is no wrong way to finger paint. There is no expectation to stay inside lines or follow a plan. The page becomes a place where emotions can move gently and safely.

Mindfulness Through Play

For many adults, finger painting reconnects creativity with playfulness. It reminds us that creating doesn’t have to be serious or perfect. Mindfulness can be simple. It can feel like curiosity instead of effort.

When we allow ourselves to play, even briefly, the nervous system often responds with a sense of ease.

A Gentle Finger Painting Practice

If you’d like to try it yourself:

  1. Set out washable, non-toxic paints and paper.

  2. Take a slow breath before you begin.

  3. Notice how the paint feels on your fingers.

  4. Let your hands move in any way that feels kind.

  5. Pause when you need to. You can stop anytime.

A Kind Reminder

You don’t need to create anything meaningful for others.
This time is just for you.
Each color, each touch, is a gentle act of care.

Love and Light,

Sarah
